Being “green,” which for me means buying local, organic food, is always fraught with indecision. The green choice is almost always expensive, too often prohibitively so, and to my way of thinking, that’s just downright wrong.

Senators Urge Reinstatement of Bank Separation →
Senators Maria Cantwell and John McCain proposed on Wednesday legislation that would reinstate the firewall between commercial and investment banks, and give financial firms a year to break themselves up. I disagree with McCain on a lot of things but he is right on this one. It seems the senator agrees with Paul Volcker about the financial innovations of the last 30 years.

Kelly Evans is incorrect when she says that Apple doesn’t buy companies. The company bought NeXT for its operating system, the core of OS X. Well, it got Steve Jobs back too. The iTunes story is the first third of the video. Other economic stories are pretty interesting.

The Ecology of Finance  →
The financial system needs to start working like a productive ecosystem. It should be characterised by diversity and an ability to sustain specialised and adapted life in the face of external shocks. Instead of a monoculture of mega-banks deemed too big to fail and answerable only to the demands of private shareholders, an ecology of finance would involve a range of different financial...
